David Goggins, the retired Navy SEAL known for his superhuman feats of endurance, wasn't on my radar, then in 2019, a Joe Rogan interview introduced me to this man who redefined human potential. Goggins' message resonated deeply – we all possess incredible willpower waiting to be tapped. His book, "Can't Hurt Me," became a motivational bible, and his 4x4x48 Challenge – running 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours straight – became my ultimate test.
Fast forward to 2022. Having traded Richmond, Virginia for the lush jungle of Costa Rica, I decided to conquer the Goggins Challenge. Here, amidst the stunning beauty, I would push myself to the limit, raising money for the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, a cause close to my heart.

Underestimating the Tropics: A Lesson in Adaptation
My training plan, built around running 10k weekly and FARMERSTRENGTH™ workouts, felt solid. However, I woefully underestimated the impact of the Costa Rican environment. My initial plan to run on Playa Hermosa beach at night, lulled by cool ocean breezes, quickly unraveled. Mid-tide forced me onto the soft sand slope, putting stress on my hips. The "refreshing" ocean air was replaced by hot, humid mugginess. Sand crabs scuttled around my feet, and ghostly white herons stalked me through the dense ocean mist. By the end of my first 4-mile run, I was drenched, my mind racing with "what ifs.”

Learning from Mistakes: Fine-Tuning My Approach
Nighttime runs proved difficult. Sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings presented its own challenges and high tide forced me between the jungle and the surf. This forced a switch to the busy Costanera highway. While not ideal, dodging traffic was preferable to battling the elements on the beach at high tide during the night. I felt the strong gusts of wind as 18-wheelers rolled past at highway speed, a testament to the ever-changing conditions. Daylight brought a different set of challenges as the scorching sun beat down. Thankfully, the knowledge of tide tables prevented future beach fiascos. With swollen feet and throbbing toenails, I switched to Merino wool socks for comfort and incorporated my Altra Escalante shoes for road runs.

Beyond the Physical: Tapping into the Primal
By Day 2, my body entered survival mode. Sleep became a luxury, replaced by a primal focus on the task at hand. My appetite dwindled, with only peanut butter, honey, and water going down. Yet, a strange sense of clarity emerged. This extreme test was awakening a primal version of me, teaching me to harness the immense power of the human spirit.

Completing the challenge with 50 push-ups at the finish line was exhilarating. It wasn't just about personal triumph; it was about the incredible support that fueled my resolve. Those push-ups marked the culmination of a special challenge with my friend Hunter Pritt. He pledged to double his donation to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation if I finished the challenge with 50 push-ups. Seeing the final tally of $2,400 raised made the accomplishment even sweeter. David Goggins' words echoed in my head, "Let me enjoy my pain." The next day, every ache was a badge of honor, a testament to pushing beyond perceived limits.

Lessons Learned, Shared, and Lived
This experience wasn't just about me. It was about sharing the power of pushing boundaries with my FARMERSTRENGTH™ athletes. Goggins was right – when the mind says "enough," there's always much more left in the tank. This challenge wasn't about speed or distance; it was about grit, determination, and the indomitable human spirit.
